Ariana DeBose Was in Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Awe’ in Kraven the Hunter
Ariana DeBose I couldn’t be more excited to make his Marvel debut Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
“Who wouldn’t want to do the opposite of that man?” DeBose, 33, was told only Us Weekly while discussing his upcoming film Kraven the Hunter on Monday, December 9. “She shines and shines in our film.”
DeBose also shared his admiration for the director JC Chandorwho was his fan before booking the supervillain flick. “I loved his film Margin Call,” he said. “So, I thought he had a real understanding of how to take big risks in a universe, in a Sony Marvel universe, that was already establishing itself, but he wanted to try something different.”
Kraven the Hunter tells the story of the origin of the villain Spider-Man (played by Taylor-Johnson) and how he became known as the greatest – and most ruthless – hunter in the world. The film marks Taylor-Johnson’s second major Marvel role, having previously appeared as Quicksilver in 2015. Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Playing a character with super strength instead of super speed, DeBose said Us that Taylor-Johnson was dedicated to his physical transformation to Kraven (real name Sergey Nikolaevich Kravinoff).
“I was very surprised by his commitment,” he said. “I’m thinking of playing an actor like this, yes, there is work you do as an actor, but this was the first time I had the opportunity to see up close the level of dedication and commitment that goes into it. physical, conditioning, you know, changing your body, building muscles, muscle toning. There is a real scientific process to it. “
Aside from Physique, DeBose noted that Taylor-Johnson is “also a comedic actor,” adding, “There’s something she did one day in a scene and I don’t know if that’s what really made the movie, but my God, like, ‘I don’t know how she did it. that.’ It was just genius. It was fun.”
The Oscar winner, meanwhile, stars as another famous comic book villain, Calypso, in the film, though DeBose remains tight-lipped about the details of his version of the character. “Calypso is a slippery character, I think, or at least when I read the script, that’s what I took away from it,” he explained. “And I liked the idea of playing a character like that.”
While Kraven and Calypso were dating in the comics, DeBose said Us their romance is not the focus of their on-screen relationship. “What becomes of the partnership between him and Calypso, and the collaboration between men and women on screen that are not always said to be dating, I think that would be rare in the industry,” he shared. “That made me very happy.”
Despite playing a character who uses magic in the new film, DeBose’s superpowers are just as effective. “I think, maybe, just the clarity of reading auras and character,” he said Us. “If that would be my biggest strength for everyone I meet, to know, ‘Cool, cool. I’ll go,’ or, ‘Cool, let’s talk.’ … Like, something written by your head and it’s like [pinging noises]’This person is a psychopath.’ That would be great.”
Kraven the Hunter will be in theaters on Friday, December 13.
