Apple’s Magic Mouse may be getting a major overhaul in the next year or so

The Magic Mouse has gone a long time without major changes to its design beyond things like ditching AA batteries and getting a USB-C port, but now Apple is reportedly planning a revamp. Of Open it Journalist Mark Gurman reports that Apple has begun working on prototypes for a modern version of the Magic Mouse, which was first released back in 2009.

While some users loved the Magic Mouse for its touch controls, other features such as its nonergonomic design and bottom charging port have been the subject of complaints for years. We don’t know what the redesign will actually bring, but it would be nice to see those things fixed eventually. And it sounds like we will. According to Gurman, “Apple is looking to create something more important, while also fixing long-standing complaints — yes, including the charging port problem.” It may still be a while before we see a new Magic Mouse. Gurman notes that it could take another year to 18 months to get it ready for marketing.

The newsletter also gives us more details about the rumored new AirTag that Apple is said to have in the works for release next year. Building on his previous reports about the next-generation AirTag with a better chip and a stronger design, Gurman now reports that the new tracker will have “a new band chip that matches the one introduced in the iPhone 15,” he said. it can triple its visible range with Precision Finding.
