Andrew Garfield Mourns His Mother’s Death on ‘Sesame Street’

Andrew Garfield he can have a second, and more successful, career as a therapist.

The actor, 41, shared his wise thoughts about grief and loss Elmo to Sesame Street. Their conversation is from the heart, which released on Friday, October 18it went viral online, with fans sharing clips of Garfield crying while talking about the loss of his mother, Lynnwho died of pancreatic cancer in 2019.

“It’s actually okay to miss someone,” Garfield told the red furry muppet.

“The corner?” Elmo replied. “Elmo is always sad when he misses someone.”

“Me too,” Garfield said. “But, you know, that sadness is a kind of gift. “It’s a lovely thing to hear, in a way, because it means you really loved someone when you miss them. When I remember my mother, I remember all the caresses I used to get from her, all the hugs I used to get from her, and it makes me feel close to her, in an unusual way. … When I remember him, I remember that it was because he made me so happy. So I can celebrate him, and remember him at the same time.”

Garfield seems to have channeled these deep feelings into his latest film, We live in a Timewhere he plays the partner of an award-winning chef (Florence Pugh) to deal with a serious illness. The film hit theaters in the US on Friday, and premiered in the UK at the BFI London Film Festival on Thursday, October 17. Garfield walked the red carpet in a cardboard cutout of Pugh, 28, who was unable to attend the event due to filming commitments for his upcoming role in East of Edencurrently filming in New Zealand.

With Pugh in place, Garfield was out and about to promote We live in a Timeand it is seen everywhere: In examination; on podcasts; to Sesame Street; and continue Amelia Diemoldenberg‘s Chicken Shop Day A YouTube series, in which he and Dimoldenberg, 30, made headlines because of their insults.

During the interview, the two played down romance speculation after fans talked about their chemistry on red carpets a few years ago.

“I think something is going on,” he asked recently nominated for one Oscaranswering his own question.

“Do you think that, or this is for the people [cameras]? If this wasn’t here, do you think we would go on a certain date? Do you think this f-ed up, the fact that we could go on a certain date at a certain time? Maybe,” he said. “Take out all the practicality and logic. I actually believe, maybe, we could have it without all this.”

Later in their interview, Garfield said he thought the two would “have a great time” hanging out together off camera. “I think we would enjoy being together.” Dimoldenberg, however, closed things off by announcing, “I think we should be friends.”

After expressing regret for framing Garfield’s friends, the host admitted that he doesn’t know what he wants when it comes to relationships. Garfield ended the conversation by making a suggestion.

“I feel like this, like, should be a practice cycle,” he said. “I feel we should do it again, actually, and better. This should be just, like practice.”
