Andrade: Canelo, Avoid Benavidez! – Boxing news 24
Demetrius Andrade is warning Canelo Alvarez to avoid his former champion, David Benavidez, after losing to him via sixth round stoppage in 2023. Andrade thinks Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is too big and is throwing too many combinations for Canelo to beat. he.
It’s understandable why Demetrius is trying to make Benavidez sound invincible because that lessens the impact of his defeat on him. He took an ego hit in that fight, losing his first job. So, he’s trying to protect his ego by making Benavidez sound like he’s a top talent when in fact, he’s not.
Benavidez’s Next Opponent
We saw that in his fight with the 37-year-old Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. Gvozdyk had just come out of a four-year retirement and knocked out Benavidez, putting all kinds of bumps on his face.
Canelo has not said that he wants to fight the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, and the two fighters are now competing in different weight classes. Benavidez, 28, fights at light heavyweight and will challenge the reigning WBA 175-lb champion David Morrell in 33 days on February 1st at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
If Benavidez loses that fight by knockout, he may return to the 168-lb division if he can still make weight. It would be pointless to stay at 175 if Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) destroys him. Morrell is as big as Benavidez but he is faster, hits harder, is smaller, and has better technical skills.
There is a good chance Morrell will win that fight and permanently solve Canelo’s problem, not that he needs help. Andrade, 36, may be impressed by Benavidez’s striking abilities, but he is not a heavy hitter. He couldn’t even stop Caleb Plant.
The only reason he can stop Andrade is because of his size and youth advantage. He was 26 when he defeated Demetrius last year on November 25.
Don’t do it!
“I don’t think Canelo beats David [Benavidez]. I don’t blame him for not fighting David. Canelo, stay away from David. Don’t do it,” said Demetrius Andrade on Fight Hub TV. “I’m taller and taller than Canelo. I don’t know if Canelo [can beat Benavidez]. That’s a big boy.
“You have to have the right skill, movement, IQ, smarts to beat David unless David fights the next big guy at 175 it will be a different story. But at 168, that’s how you have to be to beat him.
“Canelo is smaller than me, I was able to push David for a few rounds and do whatever I had to do. But that weight and his height, and he can throw punches in bunches, will be a tough task for Canelo.
“David is not one to give up either. Canelo doesn’t beat him,” Andrade said of his belief that Benavidez will not lose to Alvarez.
Canelo would have fought Benavidez by now, but he talked a lot of trash and looked needy. The way Benavidez seemed to fixate on Alvarez is terrifying, almost like a stalker. For any popular fighter to have someone who sounds concerned about the way Benavidez came across, they would pay attention to him as well.
