A 1941 time capsule was found by a contractor at Indiana Dunes National Park in the town of Porter, officials announced last week.
“On the afternoon of September 23, 2024, as restoration work funded by the Great American Outdoors Act was underway, a copper box was found that had been oxidized and sealed at the base of the lodge,” park rangers wrote in a recent Facebook post.
The post included photos showing the contents of the box and a history of the park area where the time capsule was found.

It was taken from the Good Fellow Youth Camp, which served as a summer camp for the children of US Steel Company employees between 1941 and 1976 before being purchased by the National Park Service (NPS) in 1976, according to the NPS website.

After carefully unwrapping a rolled piece of paper covered in tar, park rangers found a 48-star American flag.
Wrapped in the flag were many documents, including memorandums, speeches, deeds and newspaper articles.

All the items were placed behind the last stone that was placed in the foundation of the lodge.
A paper was also placed inside the box indicating the completion of the construction of the camp.

“We all realize that in a few minutes we will have dedicated these buildings, which have history and culture, so that they can grow mentally, physically, and morally for our youth,” said the paper. “In doing so, we are doing one of the most important jobs that falls to men in each generation.

“We should not be proud of the work done by one of us in the development of this Youth Camp. Instead, we should consider it as a sacred work, in accordance with the principles we respect each other, and pursue it together as a natural development of our development. a democratic way of life.”
Park officials say Indiana Dunes National Park plans to make the items public.
