An Apple employee has sued the company for monitoring employees’ personal belongings
An Apple ad-tech employee filed a lawsuit against his employer on Sunday about how the company monitors its employees, Semafor reports.
Apple wants its employees to use Apple devices at work but work-issued devices are so limited that many employees use their personal devices, or tie their devices to their personal iCloud. To do that, the suit says, employees must allow Apple to install software that gives Apple access to search anything stored on the device or iCloud. The lawsuit alleges that Apple’s policies allow it to monitor employees even when they are not at work. The employee claims that Apple used its policies to harm his employment opportunities.
The suit captures some of the challenges many corporate employees face: How much visibility should an employer have into personal devices when they are used for work, or to regulate personal codes of conduct? If Apple loses, it can stop the growing trend of bossware in the workplace. Apple did not comment to TechCrunch, but told Semafor that it strongly disagrees with the suit’s allegations.
