American is adding 3 regional routes, but cutting a new international flight

American Airlines is making significant network changes.

The Fort Worth-based carrier filed plans over the weekend to launch three new domestic routes, as first seen in Cirium’s plans and later confirmed by a carrier spokesperson.

Methods include:

• Chicago to Bismark, North Dakota
• Chicago to Boise, Idaho
• Phoenix to Appleton, Wisconsin

All three new routes will be operated by American Eagle partner Envoy Air with Embraer E175 regional aircraft. Flights to Bismark and Boise will operate daily starting June 5, 2025, while flights from Phoenix to Appleton will begin on Feb. 15, 2025, but will only be valid on Saturdays.

Interestingly, the new flight from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) to Appleton represents the longest American routes operated by a regional airline. At 1,463 miles, this nearly three-and-a-half-hour flight may not be the most comfortable flight on the E175, especially since these jets are currently equipped with outdated Wi-Fi connectivity and limited entertainment options. . (American will be retrofitting its regional jets with faster Wi-Fi in the coming months.)

However, American’s new Phoenix route from Appleton International Airport (ATW) will provide some competition to the more expensive Allegiant, which currently flies non-stop from ATW to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) – the second airport of – metro Phoenix.

While new routes are always exciting, American is making a big change in Tulum, where the airline will stop flying from Charlotte starting Feb. 13, 2025.

Tulum is one of America’s newest destinations. The airline just started flying there in March after Tulum International Airport officially opened following years of construction.

As soon as the opening of the airport approached, US airlines rushed to start adding flights there. On the other hand, American has added service to Tulum from three domestic destinations: Charlotte, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami.

American has long been the largest US airline serving Latin America (largely because of its major hub in Miami), so it’s no surprise that the airline has added three routes to Tulum. (United is the largest US carrier in Tulum with four routes from domestic hubs.)

In a statement confirming the decision, an American Airlines spokesperson shared that “as part of an ongoing evaluation of our network, American has made the difficult decision to discontinue service between Charlotte (CLT) and Tulum, Mexico (TQO). It offers service from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Miami ( MIA) to TQO.”

In the US, service from Dallas and Miami should be enough to cover most travelers looking for one-way routes to Tulum. Although Charlotte is the airline’s second largest hub, American flyers can still connect through Miami from many of the same cities that have an airline that maintains a Charlotte route.

In other network news, American is making three significant changes to its Florida flight next summer. The airline will suspend several routes to the Sunshine State during what is typically the off-season for Florida travel. These include Fort Lauderdale to Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), Miami to Westchester County Airport (HPN) north of New York City, and Key West to Chicago.
