Alexander Zverev held on to survive a shock from Tallon Griekspoor, winning a seventh match point in a tense third-round contest at the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
With the victory, Zverev is in the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 for the ninth time in a row, still alive in his quest for a second title in 2024.
World No. 3 rallied from an out-of-sorts second set to win 7-6(6), 2-6, 7-6(2) and extend their lead in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series to 5-1.
Zverev, a 2019 finalist in Shanghai, will face David Goffin, who is in the fourth round of the ATP Masters 1000 for the first time since the 2022 Madrid Open. The 33-year-old Belgian came back from a strike to beat American Marcos Giron 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a tense match.
Zverev’s resilience shone through in the opening set, converting his second break point to swing the match in his favour. The Germans, however, failed to capitalize on the momentum with an error-filled set.
Looking to move on to the fourth round of all ATP Masters 1000s in 2024, Zverev put together some of his best tennis to win in a thrilling tiebreaker.
