BAGUIO CITY – Noting the double shooting incidents in Abra in 2024, newly installed Abra police director Col. Gilbert A. Fati-ig vowed that there will be strict security measures in the year 2025.
The number of shooting incidents recorded from January to December 29, 2024 in the province reached 40, and most of them took place in the provincial capital Bangued (13 incidents).
The number of dead was not given by the Abra police.
Mr. Fati-ig also noted that only six of the 27 cities in Abra province had no shooting incidents recorded in the past year.
The Abra police linked most of the cases to people’s quarrels fueled by excessive drinking on the part of the parties involved.
Mr. Fati-ig said that he has instructed all police agencies in the province to strengthen visibility, to walk around on foot to prevent shooting and to monitor checkpoints because according to him, most of the suspects were traveling on motorcycles and large vehicles.
Alarmed by the number of shootings, the mayor of the city of La Paz and the national president of the League of Mayors of the Philippines Joseph Sto. Niño “JB” B. Bernos said the shooting and all other forms of violence in Abra “must stop.” To achieve this, he said, “police visibility is very important.” – Artemio A. Dumlao
