Mason, 20, stopped Vasquez with a left upper body injury in the second round, pulling himself out of a tough situation to score the knockout at the 1:59 mark. Vasquez suffered a right leg injury after a straight left from Mason early in the second round, and was unable to defend himself.
After the fight, Mason admitted he made a mistake by entering the fight early against Vasquez, 30, who was born in the Dominican Republic. In retrospect, Mason feels he should have punched first before going inside to fight the big puncher fighter.

On the first down, Mason tried to throw an uppercut inside and was nailed by a short left hook from Vasquez. After that, Mason came back to drop Vasquez with a thunderous left in the first round.
Mason was like a shark smelling blood in the water, attacking Vasquez without realizing it. In the final minutes of the first round, Vasquez again dropped Mason with a left hook. He was not hurt when he got up but his face was surprised as if he was saying, ‘How did I get caught again?’

Mason Wants Title Shot In 2025

Top Rank will decide to push Mason for a world title shot in 2025, as they would prefer to continue promoting him after the problems he had against the unopposed Vasquez. For Mason to have a chance against any world champion, he will need to avoid making the same sloppy mistakes that led to his double whammy.
Assuming Mason will fight for a world title next year, a fight against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, WBO champion Denys Berinchyk or whoever holds the IBF belt would be good options.
“When I looked at it, I was like, ‘Oh no,’ but this turned me into a new fighter,” Mason told Fighthype of his belief that he will improve his performance. “I can say I went inside early. Being a power puncher, I knew I was going to go in there to punch him, but I got in early.”
