Police patrolling a New Zealand airport uncovered $2 million worth of methamphetamine wrapped as Christmas presents a Canadian woman tried to hide.

A 29-year-old woman arrived at Auckland International Airport A New Zealander on a flight from Vancouver on December 8 with illegal drugs in his bag, according to a release from the New Zealand Customs Service.

When she got off, the police questioned the woman and searched her bag, where they found more than 22 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden under a light-colored wrapping paper.

Officials say the Canadian man’s wallet contained an estimated $2 million worth of the illegal drug.

Auckland Airport manager Paul Williams called the incident “a classic attempt by international organized crime groups” to exploit the busy tourist season.

“But a busy airport does not mean that Customs is not focused or paying attention to anyone who may be at risk of drugs,” Williams said in a statement. “Airport teams are made up of vigilante officers who focus on catching those who are trying to do harm in New Zealand.”

The woman has appeared in district court on charges of importation and possession of Class A controlled drugs, police said.

“More collaborative work is being done with our Canadian partners to disrupt gangs and drug smuggling, including passenger traffic,” Williams told Fox News Digital via email. “As this is part of an ongoing investigation, Customs will not release any further information for operational reasons.”

Authorities said the woman was arrested.
