A Tennessee pizza shop is facing backlash after it refused to serve a same-sex wedding

A pizza shop in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has said it is a choice of “personal responsibility” not to serve food at same-sex weddings after critics slammed the policy.

Wood-fired pizza shop Pizzeria Cortile posted a statement on its Facebook account on Tuesday confirming its policy after the left-leaning media company first brought it to its attention the day before.

“Recently we made the difficult decision not to hold a wedding because of our personal beliefs,” wrote Pizzeria Cortile. “This belief comes from a place of personal belief, which we know is not shared by all people, and it is one that we adhere to without judging others. This decision was not intended to hurt or harm anyone, and we apologize for the pain this has caused people who were part of our community.

“We see and hear the response of everyone who reached out today. We hope that in time we can have the opportunity to extend kindness and listen to each other, and remember that although we may not always agree, we can still treat each other with dignity and love.”

This statement thanked the community and asked that they be given the opportunity to “continue to show you love when you walk through our doors.”

Pizzeria Cortile has limited comments under that post. However, its Facebook page was bombarded with hundreds of negative comments opposing the decision under other unrelated posts.

An earlier post on Sunday with pictures of one of its dishes received more than 1,500 comments reacting to the controversy in the last 24 hours.

“There are no two logical sides here. No one asked you to be gay. Or promote any kind of message. They asked for pizza. And the bullies refused. That’s the whole story. It’s shallow. It’s black and white. It’s racism,” read one comment on Facebook with more than 200 likes. .

“Are you going to start asking your fans how they behave sexually when you enter the venue?” the other top post is ridiculous. “Since I’m bisexual, am I welcome?… You can go ahead and put it on your website that you don’t support/support gay people.”

One of the top comments suggested that someone notify the IRS to audit the business.

Internet commentators also criticized the owners as “bullshit” and wished that their business would not be affected by this news.

One commenter defended the business, citing Supreme Court precedent.

“The Supreme Court ruled on this, and it’s actually not discrimination. You’re free to make your own choices, but they are. Who are you to force someone else to share your beliefs but expect them not to do the same,” the words read.

The flood of negative attention appeared to be driven by posts on Reddit and readers of the progressive news website Chattanooga Holler, which first drew attention to the company’s policy on Monday.

“INBOX: Apparently, Pizzeria Cortile will not cater same-sex weddings. Just to let people not waste their time (or money),” the Chattanooga Holler posted on its social media accounts, along with a screenshot response from pizzeria.

“All I hear is ‘We’re allowed to hate gays bc God,'” one scoffed under Holler’s Facebook post.

“Calling apartheid ‘personal condemnation’ is bullshit,” added another.

A social media post titled, “Big L for Pizzeria Cortile,” on the Chattanooga Reddit on Monday also drew 900 comments, most of which seemed to disapprove of the business.

Pizzeria Cortile did not respond to a request for comment.
