A knife attack at a Chinese school has killed at least 8 and injured 17, days after a car attack killed dozens.
Eight people were killed and 17 others injured Saturday in a knife attack at a school in eastern China, and the suspect – a former student – has been arrested, police said.
The attack took place at night at the Wuxi Vocational Institute of Arts and Technology in the city of Yixing in Jiangsu province, Yixing police said in a statement, confirming the death toll.
It was the second deadly violence in China in a few days.
Earlier this week, a 62-year-old man it killed 35 people and injured more than 40 while driving his small SUV through a crowd in the southern city of Zhuhai. The suspect was found in the car with a knife, with wounds to the neck believed to be self-inflicted, according to police.
Police said the suspect in the knife attack was a 21-year-old student at the school who was going to graduate this year, but failed his exams.
“He returned to the school to express his anger and commit these murders,” said the police, adding that the suspect confessed himself.
In Yixing, police said emergency services were fully mobilized to treat the injured, and provide follow-up assistance to those affected by the attack.
Violent knife crime is rare in China, where guns are strictly controlled, but attacks with such a high death toll are rare.
In recent months, there have been other attacks.
In October in Shanghai, a man killed three people and injured 15 others when he was attacked with a knife in a supermarket.
And last month, a Japanese schoolboy was stabbed to death in the southern city of Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.
