A Black Hole Causes Stars to Explode

The high rate of novae in the area leads to two possibilities: either the region around the black hole has more binary star systems, or the white dwarfs in the region have twice the chance of exploding.

Researchers rely on the second possibility as the most likely option. That would mean that the plane itself is doing something to the stars.

The idea that the researchers proposed at the beginning was that the jet of the black hole caused the star associated with the dwarf to warm up as it passed. That would cause the companion star to eject more hydrogen, which could trigger a nova explosion.

However, this idea was dismissed based on the amount of heat the process would require.
