The UN peacekeepers in Lebanon must be respected
Pope Francis has issued an urgent appeal to respect the operation of the United Nations Interim Forces in Southern Lebanon (UNIFIL), after several UN soldiers were injured by gunfire or explosions during Israel’s attack on Lebanon.
The Pope said at the Angelus prayer in Rome that he follows the situation in the Middle East with great concern. “I also ask for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all sides. Let’s take the path of dialogue and negotiation for peace.”
The Pope spoke like this when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the peacekeeping forces in Lebanon to withdraw from their positions in the conflict.
The attack on UN troops and their headquarters in southern Lebanon a few days ago sparked outrage around the world, including those close to Israel.
