Scientists Monitor Unusual Earthquakes at West Coast Volcano, Eruption Imminent?

Although ash would not pose a major threat to the town of Trout Lake in the event of an eruption of Mount Adams, the formation of lahars and destructive lava flows on the volcano’s slopes would be a major concern for the area.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), lahars can flow for miles, pick up a trail of debris and swallow everything in their path. These powerful mudflows are often considered one of the most threatening hazards in the Cascades.
After the recent uptick in seismic activity was detected, the Cascades Volcano Observatory installed another temporary seismic station in the area on October 7 and will add two near Mount Adams in the coming weeks.
Currently, there is one permanent monitoring station, located seven kilometers southwest of the summit of Mount Adams.
