Honda is recalling 1.7M vehicles with a malfunctioning gearbox

Honda is recalling about 1.7 million Honda and Acura vehicles in the US over concerns that they may have a power steering gearbox that could pose a safety hazard.

“American Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer for repair as soon as they are notified,” Honda said Wednesday.

Affected 2022-2025 Honda Civic Sedan, 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Sedan, 2022-2025 Honda Civic Hatchback, 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Hatchback, 2023-2025 Honda Civic Type R, 2023-2025 Honda Civic Type R, 2023-2025 Honda Civic Type R, 2023-2025 Honda Civic Type R V Hybrid, 2025 Honda CR-V Fuel Cell, 2023-2025 Honda HR-V, 2023-2025 Acura Integra and 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S vehicles may have an “improperly manufactured steering wheel,” the automaker warns .

The part, if faulty, “can swell during use, reducing the thickness of the oil film between the worm wheel and worm gear,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report. The spring preload of the worm gear may be too high.

In recalled vehicles, increased friction between those two components “may increase steering forces and stiffness, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” the report said.

The defective steering box component and the problem it caused did not cause any injuries or deaths, according to the NHTSA report. During that time, the company has filed more than 10,300 warranty claims.

“Registered owners of all affected models will be contacted by mail and urged to take their vehicles to an authorized Honda or Acura dealer,” said Honda.

Those notices will be sent to Honda and Acura customers for recalled vehicles in November, the automaker said. It has already informed the sellers about this matter.

The fix will involve the dealer installing an “upgraded” worm gear spring free of charge. They will also “re-distribute or add oil” to the worm wheel at no charge, according to Honda.

“Owners who paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense may be eligible for a refund, according to the refund program on file with NHTSA,” the report said.
