Several major Florida airports are temporarily closed as the state braces for another storm to hit, further impacting the already battered area.
Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 4 hurricane, is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast early Thursday, bringing the risk of catastrophic and life-threatening lightning and urban flooding. It comes after the state was hit by Hurricane Helene in late September, which caused severe flooding and a tornado that swept through the southeast, killing at least 232 people in six states.
On Wednesday, the Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers posted on X that it would remain closed until Thursday.

“Airlines, car rental agencies and parking lots are not operating,” the airport posted on social media.
While it planned to resume operations on Friday, the airport said its decision to do so “will depend on damage assessment and staffing, as many RSW staff will be impacted by the storm.”

Orlando International Airport also tweeted Wednesday morning that it had “ceased commercial operations” ahead of Hurricane Milton’s landfall.
The airport said it will resume operations as soon as it is safe and based on an assessment of its damage.
Sarasota Bradenton International Airport in Sarasota also posted on X that operations will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport in Clearwater closed Tuesday after the last flight took off. The airport has written to X that it will remain closed until Thursday.
“The airport is in a mandatory zone and is not a public shelter. Be prepared and stay safe,” the airport wrote.
