‘Our hearts are with the Jewish communities’

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said “our hearts are with Jewish communities around the world” on the first day of terrorist attacks on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

“On this sad day, I want to honor the memories of the victims,” he said in a written statement, adding that the EU “stands with all the innocent people whose lives have been shattered since that terrible day.”

The attacks by Hamas “brought great suffering not only to the people of Israel, but also to innocent Palestinians.”

Von der Leyen reiterated the EU’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages.

He also promised financial assistance and aid to the people of Palestine and Lebanon.

Anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise, said von der Leyen, promising more resources to deal with the issue.
