Kathy Bates’ mum had a shocking reaction to her Oscar win: ‘You didn’t find a cure for cancer’

Kathy Bates’ mother wasn’t as happy about her daughter’s Oscar win as one might expect.

In an interview with Ben Mankiewicz on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Bates recalled her mother’s reaction to her acting success in the 1990 film “Misery.”

“When I won the Oscar for ‘Misery,'” he said, “I don’t know what all the joy is. [is] about, you didn’t find a cure for cancer.’

Bates went on to say that he forgot to thank his mother during his speech, but Mankiewicz shared a clip showing that he did.

The clip brought the actor to tears of relief, explaining, his mother “has to have my life.”

“When he died, I said come into me, I wanted his spirit to come into me, even though we had so much difficulty, but I wanted his spirit to come into me and enjoy everything that I was enjoying because of what he had left.”

Earlier in the interview, Bates shared that his parents put off retirement to fund his college education.

“My dad really had a heart attack two or three years after he quit… he had to spend a lot of money he didn’t have to send me to Southern Methodist University, and he went to work when he was 70 years old. a lot.”

Bates told The New York Times last month that he was considering retirement after his new series, “Matlock,” finally ends.

“Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, pushed for, I’m just being asked to use it all. And it’s exhausting,” she told the outlet, adding, “This is my last dance.”

In his “CBS Sunday Morning” interview, he revealed that he had a bad experience on an undisclosed film project that prompted his question to work in Hollywood.

“I think when you feel that kind of betrayal, it really hurts,” she said.

But after landing a role in “Matlock,” which he called “the best role I’ve ever played,” he reconsidered his position.

“I’m not giving up. And I’d like to stay with the program as long as it lasts, and hopefully it will continue for a very long time,” Bates said.
