The MCD House will meet again on October 5, voting for the committee seat is not on the agenda
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House will reconvene for a meeting on Saturday to discuss various policy proposals after its last adjournment due to taunting of councillors. Mayor Shelly Oberoi had adjourned the previous session on September 26, when she also postponed the election for the last vacant seat of the MCD standing committee and ordered it to be held in the next meeting of the House on October 5.
The agenda of the House meeting on Saturday noted that the MCD has already held the election of the last member of the standing committee on September 27, so it has not been included in the meeting.
“However, the matter is under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court,” said the agenda issued on Friday.
The MCD official said that the House was supposed to discuss the date of formation of the standing committee but due to the order of the Supreme Court ordering the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi not to hold the election of the chairman of the panel before the next hearing, the matter will follow. will not be discussed on Saturday.
In a last-minute intervention, Delhi LG VK Saxena overruled the postponement of the mayoral polls by the MCD standing committee and directed the MCD commissioner to conduct the elections on September 27.
Following the order of the LG, the election was held on September 27 but AAP and Congress councilors boycotted it. BJP candidate Sunder Singh won 115-0 against AAP candidate.
Mayor Oberoi has since challenged the election results in the Supreme Court, calling them “unconstitutional and undemocratic”.
The Supreme Court, on Friday, questioned the “deplorable haste” shown by LG VK Saxena’s office in conducting the polling of the sixth member of the MCD sitting committee, and expressed concern over interference in the election process.
The court ordered the LG’s office not to hold the election of the MCD standing committee chairman until the next hearing after two weeks.
In his plea, Oberoi asserted that the standing committee elections were conducted under the guidelines of the LG’s office even though it is only the mayor’s right to decide the date, time and place of the elections.
