Cruisers are getting into social media by hiding rubber ducks on board

Cruisers around the world are taking a new approach to souvenirs by bringing – and leaving – rubber ducks around the boats.

This practice has people buy rubber ducks and hide them around cruise ships. Last year alone, TikTok videos racked up thousands of views showing users hiding and finding ducks like a game.

In one Facebook group, called “Cruising Ducks,” which has more than 284,000 members, the practice is described as “a great and fun way to have fun on a trip and brighten up other people’s days.”

The Facebook group explains, “Our goal is to see how far our ducks will travel and where their journey might take them. Keep or hide, you decide, but please post your ducks’ journeys here for everyone to enjoy.”

Members are then asked to post a photo of their rubber duck on the ship and specify which route it is on.

In the past month, nearly 3,500 posts have been featured on the Facebook page.

Players online posted photos and numerical calculations of how many ducks they collected on the trip — some more than 100. (Stock)

One person posted a photo of her kids, writing, “The kids brought back 20 ducks. They loved finding them! Carnival Dream, September 21-29.”

Another person posted a photo of their 113 ducks found on Carnival Cruise Lines Jubilee in September, saying they had five “active hunters” on board and brought over 400 to hide.

The trend has reached Reddit as well, with one traveler posting on the “r/royalcaribbean” subreddit, saying they’ve been paying a steady fee for their rubber ducks.

While on board, cruisers can post a photo of their duck and the ship they’re on to a Facebook page to play the game. (Stock)

Reddit users took to the comments to criticize the offbeat situation, with one person writing, “I hate to be a killjoy, but there’s no reason for that. Just sail on and enjoy what’s already there.”

One user explained that hiding and finding ducks on the ship was a fun activity for their children on days at sea when the boat was not docked.
