eBay UK is removing sales fees from all categories to promote independent sellers

eBay UK has announced the removal of sales fees for independent sellers in all categories except motoring, as part of its ongoing efforts to simplify and improve the marketplace experience.

Private sellers will no longer need to pay a final price or regulatory fees, making it easier and more profitable to sell on the platform.

The move follows eBay UK’s previous launch of free fashion sales and introduces several new features to improve the seller experience. These include simplified listing tools with AI-generated descriptions and image enhancement, competitive shipping and a tracked delivery service prepaid by the buyer, and increased visibility of local sales through eBay Local, which offers secure personal collection.

eBay UK is also introducing eBay Balance, a new feature launched in mid-October, which allows sellers to use their earnings to make purchases, improve listings, or buy delivery labels, all from within the platform.

“Removing sales fees across all categories is designed to give buyers access to the breadth and depth of inventory, while creating a simple and streamlined experience for sellers,” said Kirsty Keoghan, GM of eBay UK.

The removal of the fee comes after a successful trial at eBay Germany, where C2C (buyer-to-buyer) volumes returned to positive growth, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars in increased GMV (gross merchandise value). eBay UK has already seen similar positive results, with a double-digit increase in fashion listings since launching free fashion sales earlier this year.

Along with its support for independent sellers, eBay continues to improve its business seller services with tailored tools, seller protection programs, and 1:1 support. The company estimates that UK households are sitting on £9 billion worth of unused equipment, free eBay sales and new features help unlock this potential.

With 56% of people selling to make money and almost half seeing it as a more sustainable way of disposing of things, the removal of fees is expected to drive an increase in listings and transactions across the UK.
