Famous British actress Maggie Smith has died at the age of 89

Maggie Smith, brilliant, scene-stealing Oscar-winning actress Miss Jean Brodie’s Premier in 1969 and gained new fans in the 21st century as the Dowager Countess of Grantham Downton Abbey and Professor Minerva McGonagall at Harry Potter films, died Friday. He was 89 years old.

Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, said in a statement that Smith died early Friday morning at a London hospital.

“She leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren who are in love with each other and are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” said a statement released by community spokeswoman Claire Dobbs.

Smith was often rated as the leading British actress of a generation that included Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench.

Jean Brodie earned her an Academy Award for best actress and a British Academy Award (BAFTA) in 1969. Smith adds supporting actor Oscar California Suite in 1978.
