CTO Mira Murati is the latest leader to leave OpenAI

Mira Murati has left OpenAI, where she had been chief technology officer since 2018. In a letter shared with the company and then sent publicly to X, Murati said he was leaving “because I want to create time and space to do my own thing.” your own assessment.”

Murati gained more visibility as the face of the AI company when he temporarily took over as CEO in November 2023 when the board of directors fired Sam Altman. Altman returned to the helm and Murati took over as CTO. However, his departure follows two other notable exits. Last month, president and co-founder Greg Brockman and co-founder John Schulman both announced they would be leaving OpenAI. Brockman takes a break and Schulman moves to rival AI company Anthropic.

Here is the full text of Murati’s statement:

Hello everyone,

I have something to share with you. After much thought, I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAl.

My six and a half years with the OpenAl team has been an incredible privilege. Although I will express my gratitude to many people in the coming days, I want to start by thanking Sam and Greg for their trust in me to lead the technology organization and their support throughout the years.

There is no perfect time to leave a place one loves, but this time feels right. Our latest release of speech-to-speech and OpenAl o1 marks the beginning of a new era of collaboration and creativity – achievements made possible by your creativity and creativity. We didn’t just build smarter models, we fundamentally changed the way AI systems learn and think about complex problems.

We’ve brought security research from the realm of theory into reality, creating models that are more robust, aligned, and controllable than ever before. Our work has made cutting-edge Al research easy and accessible, developing technology that is flexible and evolving based on everyone’s input. This success is a testament to our outstanding teamwork, and it is because of your ingenuity, dedication, and commitment that makes OpenAl stand at the pinnacle of Al innovation.

I go out because I want to create time and space to explore myself. For now, my focus is on doing everything I can to ensure a smooth transition, and to maintain the momentum we’ve built.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to build and work with this amazing team. Together, we have pushed the boundaries of scientific understanding in our quest to improve human well-being. Although I may be with you in the dungeons, I will still rebel against you all.

With deep gratitude for the friendships built, the victories achieved, and most importantly, the challenges overcome together.

Mira

In a statement to X, Altman revealed that the company’s Chief Research Officer, Bob McGrew, and VP of Research, Barret Zoph, are also leaving the company. He said they made decisions “independently and peacefully,” but it made sense to “do all of this at once” for a smooth transition. OpenAI’s leadership will go through some changes as a result, with Mark Chen, Head of Frontiers Research, named Research SVP. Research Scientist Josh Achiam has been appointed Head of Machine Alignment, and Mark Knight, Head of Security, is now Chief Information Security Officer.
