Coach Jose Benavidez Sr. predicts that his son, ‘Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez, will “destroy” David Morrell in their light heavyweight match in 11 days on February 1st on PBC on Prime Video PPV in Las Vegas.
This fight will prove that Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is “fake” A ‘terrible beast,’ living off the fame he gained by fighting against lesser opponents in 168, or if he’s right. Morrell says he’s seen fighters like Benavidez and considers him 100% “a fake.”
Now that Benavidez is fighting at 175 against a smaller fighter with the same size as him, but more power, he may be exposed by Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs).
Exit Plan Already Planned?
According to Team Morrell, Benavidez hovers between 215 and 220. So, he has the size to bounce back at cruiserweight if he falls short against the talented Cuban on February 1st.
If Benavidez loses, he may have to decide if he wants to move up to cruiserweight to try and salvage his career at that weight class. Staying at 175 would be a mistake for him because if he can’t beat Morrell, then he won’t be successful against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol.
Jose Sr. he is already discussing about come up with a strategydiscussing whether Benavidez could move up to cruiserweight to challenge WBA and WBO champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez for his belts. He will have to bide his time until IBF champion Jai Opetaia faces Zurdo in a three-belt unification. But either of these guys could be opened up for a fight with Benavidez who also loses to Morrell.
Even if Morrell is eliminated, they will be willing to fight him because he will still be famous, and he will probably have an excuse to explain his loss. He cited injuries to explain why he didn’t do well against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and fans believed him. He can do the same thing if he loses to Morrell, and people will give him a pass.
“We are 100% locked in with Morrell. He is a tough warrior, a little fighter. He’s a two-time world champion and he’s hungry. We don’t underestimate this guy,’ said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Sean Zittel regarding David Morrell, who David Benavidez faces on February 1st.
“We are 100% there. David [Benavidez] he is 28 years old. In my mind, I think David will destroy him [Morrell]. Let’s focus on that right now. Certainly, David has big dreams. He wants to fight the winner. Who doesn’t want to fight the winner of Bivol and Beterbiev? Maybe even fight Zurdo Ramirez at cruiserweight.
“Those battles are good. Big monsters in that category, and there are good opportunities at that weight. Zurdo Ramirez is going to fight another guy [IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia] with the belt, and hopefully, we also get the chance to do that,” said Benavidez Sr.
