TikTok says it will ‘go dark’ on Sunday without ‘certain’ assurances that Biden’s administration will not enforce the ban
TikTok on Friday said the social media platform would “go dark” on Sunday without “certain” assurances from the Biden administration that its ban would not be enforced.
“The statements issued today by the Biden White House and the Department of Justice failed to provide the necessary clarity and certainty to service providers essential to maintaining the availability of TikTok to more than 170 million Americans,” TikTok said in a statement sent to X.
It continued, “Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a clear statement to the satisfaction of the providers of the most important services that ensure non-compliance, TikTok will unfortunately be forced to go dark on January 19.”
CONFIDENTIAL GROUPS, PROFESSIONALS, PARENTS CALL SCOTUS BLOCK OF TIKTOK WHILE OTHERS CALL DECISION ‘UNDEMOCRATIC’
The White House earlier this week said Biden did not plan to enforce the ban that would take effect Sunday, adding that it would be up to President-elect Trump who takes office on Monday.
The US Supreme Court on Friday upheld a ban on TikTok unless Chinese subsidiary ByteDance sells it on Sunday, citing national security risks from its ties to China.
Trump said he must review the ban before making his decision.
“The decision of the Supreme Court was expected, everyone must respect it,” he said. “My decision on TikTok will be made in the near future, but I should have time to review the situation. Stay tuned!”
During the presidential campaign, Trump said he would “never block TikTok” after joining the platform.

And on Friday, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew thanked Trump for his “commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States. This is a strong First Amendment move and resists illegal censorship.”
Chew is expected to attend the inauguration on Monday.
Trump tried to shut down TikTok during his first term in office.
