U-Haul finds South Carolina, Texas and Florida among the most popular states to move to
A recent study found that the scenic Southeast has become the most popular place to move to in 2024, according to U-Haul.
The moving and storage company recently published the U-Haul Growth Index, which measures how many customers use U-Haul’s one-way trucks each year. South Carolina, which won in 2024, beat Texas, which topped the list a few years ago, from the top.
“Growth rates are calculated by each state’s net gain (or loss) of customers using U-Haul’s one-way vehicles in a calendar year,” the study explains. “The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from the more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box® moving container purchases that occur annually.”

Although Texas remains at the top, U-Haul noted that the Palmetto State actually dropped Texas from its first place last year.
“Texas has ranked first or second among U-Haul Growth States each year since 2016,” the company noted. “Florida has been fourth or higher every year since 2015.”
“Of all U-Haul movers coming from the Palmetto State in 2024, more than 51.7% are coming,” the company added.
In a statement, U-Haul International president JT Taylor said the 2024-to-one transaction “reaffirms long-standing customer trends.”
“Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families weigh the cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that lead to moving to a new area,” said Taylor. “Migration remains strong in many markets in the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast – especially in California.”

“U-Haul continues to expand its network, rental vehicles and storage initiatives so that wherever people move in 2025, we will be there to meet their needs,” he added.
The high level of migration to the Southern states is not surprising given other recent studies. Last year, the National Association of Realtors’ 2024 Migration Trends Report it also found that the Southern states were the most popular places to move to.

Interestingly, only 1% of those who migrated south came because of the weather, according to the report. Meanwhile, 42% of Americans who moved abroad cited housing-related reasons, while 26% did so for family reasons and 16% crossed borders reasons for work.
