Why David Schwimmer Is Still Haunted by His 1995 ‘SNL’ Hosting Gig

David Schwimmer showed his poor experience as a guest host Saturday Night Live.

During the interview no Stephen Colbert to The Late Show On Monday, January 13, Schwimmer, 58, recalled the time he was preparing for the 1995 gig in the middle of the height Friends‘ success. (Schwimmer starred as Ross Geller in the comedy series, which debuted in 1994.)

Schwimmer, who went to college with Colbert, 60, and studied with the TV host as a theater student, said he made a “big mistake” like the first one. Friends member to be invited to participate It’s SNL at that time.

“It was an honor … I couldn’t be happier,” Schwammer explained. “Friends at that time we were shooting on a Tuesday night and we were shooting until one in the morning, so I would fly from LA to New York on Wednesday to get there. Schwimmer, currently appearing in the Hulu/Disney+ series Goosebumps: Disappearancehe continued, “When I walked into the writers’ room, all the writers looked at me like I just slept with their mother or something. They weren’t happy to see me and I didn’t know [why].”

The actor explained in detail how he “somehow coped” with the next two days even though he was “hurt” by being accepted by his colleagues.

When asked by Colbert how the hosting appearance went, Schwimmer commented, “I don’t remember how it went, to be honest.”

Schwimmer added that the mysterious writers’ reactions were clarified “years later.” He explained how “he was talking to someone who was in charge of the show and they said, no, no, no, you have to appear on Monday.”

“Nobody told me and for years, I didn’t know why,” he added.

Although he has not resolved the issue, Shwimmer said he was recently invited to the 50th anniversary event, which will be shown next month.

“It’s been 30 years, I think maybe they’ve forgotten that they don’t like me? Or, it’s an intern who’s been tasked with emailing everyone that’s ever been handled, but I don’t know what to do,” Schwammer said.

Colbert then urged his friend to “go” to the event, telling Schwimmer that he had “worked there a little bit” and failed to get his own invitation.

“Yeah, but I don’t want to be like Charlie Brown with football, you know, he shows ambition and, no, we don’t want that here,” Schwimmer said. “Do you want to be my plus one?” (It’s SNL will mark its 50th anniversary on February 16 with a three-hour live special featuring five decades worth of popular cast members and fan-favorite guest hosts.)

A visibly excited Colbert then accepted Schwimmer’s invitation, cementing it with a firm handshake on his desk.
