Shakur Stevenson says he wants to be called “the best fighter in the world” when people watch him defend his WBC lightweight title against Floyd Schofield on the February 22 card next month in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This fight will be shown live on DAZN PPV, and many fans will be watching. This is Shakur’s biggest chance to grow his fanbase by putting on a show and steal the spotlight in the main event between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
“Good in the World”
“I rule. I have no close battles. You see me go up one, two, three, four, five, six rounds, and then there comes a point where someone wants to finish you. They want to get hit, or there will be a lot of criticism for it,” Shakur Stevenson wrote to Secondsout, responding to people criticizing his fighting style, calling him ‘boring.’
“I stay in the pocket a lot. My last fight [Artem Harutyunyan]I stayed in the pocket. “If he’s not paying attention, I’m going to have to put him in his place,” Shakur said of Floyd Schofield. “I’m going to fight all those guys. I will fight Ryan. I’ll fight Devin or Teo. Any of those men. If those guys want to fight me, I’ll fight them.
“That I’m the best fighter in the world,” Shakur said when asked what he wants people to say about him when he fights Schofield on February 22 in Riyadh. “I know I’m the best fighter in the world, and I can’t wait to prove it,” Stevenson said.
It’s not true that Shakur is always “very in the pocket” in his fights. He only does that when he is facing weak opposition. When he is faced with intensity and power, he does not stay in the pocket, which is why he is criticized.
In Stevenson’s last fight against Artem Harutyunyan, he stayed in the pocket because he was weak and slow. In his pre-match against Edwin De Los Santos, Stevenson rode his bike throughout the 12-round fight and was cheered on by the fans.
The fights that Shakur would like to fight don’t like to fight him. He says he would like to fight Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, and Devin Haney. Those guys won’t fight him because he doesn’t hold back and moves a lot. That’s why Stevenson didn’t get a nibble from Gervonta Davis and Vasily Lomachenko.
“I would like to fight Tank. I would like to fight Gervonta Davis. I think that is the biggest and best fight that can be done in boxing. “Whenever they want to do these big fights, I’m ready to fight anybody,” said Stevenson.
Turki Al-Sheikh may entice Tank to fight Shakur, but it will take a huge commitment for that fight to happen because there is no interest on the part of the Baltimore native in fighting him.
