Ali Larter Explains Why His Family Left LA for Idaho 4 Years Ago

Ali Larter with her husband, Hayes MacArthurthey moved from Los Angeles to a small town in Idaho during the coronavirus pandemic — and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Our children’s schools were closed during COVID and we were like, ‘Why are we sitting here?’ It wasn’t working at all in Los Angeles,” Larter, 48, said on the Friday, January 10, episode of Live with Kelly and Mark. “So, my husband said, ‘Let’s take a trip to Idaho [and] go skiing with the kids.”

Larter and MacArthur, 47, have been married since 2008 and have a son Theodore, 14, and a daughter Vivienne, 9. Their closed winter getaway ended up being a two-month home.

“We love nature and mountains and all this new life,” the Landman The actress appeared on Friday. “We are totally dedicated and we did it. We literally had our own house [in California] less than a year. We moved back to LA and realized we wanted to put our family first. “

He later added, “Our life is very different there and it’s a small town, and it carries a different kind of accountability. It’s something Hayes and I wanted to do for our children, so we did.”

He later explained that their family now has a “real life” that is “rooted in reality” since they moved to the mountains.

“Thank you very much,” Larter said, later joking that son Theodore was initially not happy about the gesture. “He likes fast cars and designer colognes and all that stuff, like, he wants to be in the big city. I’m like, ‘On the 18th, you can go [back].’ … He really loves it now and I think he understands how good his wolf pack is there.”

According to Larter, he and MacArthur also “felt if you can’t ride a mountain, you can run a boardroom.”

“We just believe in raising them like that,” he concluded.

Larter and MacArthur raised their children in the small town of Sun Valley, which has played host to many celebrities and prestigious festivals and business conferences over the years.

“We fell in love with the beauty of the mountains and their quiet size,” said Larter Rue magazine in profile for September 2024. Neither of us had ever lived in a small town before. People look at each other. There is a real sense of community here and we are very happy to be a part of it.”
