Benavidez’s Excuse-Ridden Path To Morrell Fight
David Benavidez continues to use the steroids talk as a selling point in his fight with ‘regular’ WBA light heavyweight champion David Morrell on February 1.
It’s a weird way to promote a fight and get the fans interested, but Benavidez doesn’t seem to have much to say during his interviews. And, you are I still make excuses with his impressive performance in his debut at 175 against Oleksandr Gvozdyk last June. It sounds very weak.
PPV Title Fight
Next month, Benavidez will have his interim WBC 175-lb title on the line against Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) in his PBC title on Prime Video PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“You have never heard my name associated with drugs. You’ve heard David Morrell’s name associated with steroids,” said David Benavidez speaking to Xicana Boxing about David Morrell, addressing the baseless allegations that he was dirty before their February 1 fight.
“The guy he fought with said they tested him, but they didn’t test David Morrell, even after the fight there was no drug test. That’s strange because there are always drug tests right after the war. I want to tell people if I’m hiding something, why would I ask for more drug testing?
“We have nothing to hide, that’s why we are trying to call clean boxing. We check as much as possible to make sure there is no funny business going on.
“I will definitely punish him,” Benavidez said of Morrell. “As for when it will end, I don’t think so. I think I’ll go in and make my own game plan. The difference between my last fight [Oleksandr Gvozdyk] and his fighting [Radivoje Kalajdzic]. I went in there with two injured hands.
Excuse or Truth?
“I had a torn muscle here, I broke my ankle, I was cut when I had 10 stitches three weeks before the fight. So, I had gone through a lot of hardships. “The fighter I came out with was much better than the fighter he was facing,” said Benavidez.
“I think because of that, it shows that I am a different person. Most people, if only one hand was injured, would have called off the fight. I had two injured hands. I didn’t cancel the fight because it was a big deal.
“Tank and I fought on the same card at the PPV. So, imagine if I had left the fight, I would have disappointed my fans. I care a lot about my fans,” said Benavidez.
What the ‘Mexican Monster’ can say is that he looked worse against Gvozdyk than Morrell did in his one-sided victory over Kalajdzic. Morrell repeatedly hurt his opponent in that fight to the head, and his body got stronger as the fight went on. In contrast, Benavidez did not hurt Gvozdyk and was exhausted after six rounds. He hit the ground.
There was no sign that Benavidez was injured in his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. He was throwing punches with full force with both hands and did not appear to be injured. when Benavidez looked bad how he got tired in the second half, took a lot of heavy shots from the 37-year-old Gvozdyk, and was injured in the body.
Fatigue has nothing to do with injured hands and everything to do with Benavidez not carrying the extra weight well.
Benavidez made excuses for his poor performance in his debut at 175 against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, blaming injured hands and a recent cut. It would have been better if he had just let his performance speak for itself rather than making excuses afterwards.
