Our staff’s favorite activity of the past decade • D1Baseball

Mike Martin meets Florida State players after breaking NCAA all-time wins record in 2018 (Aaron Fitt)

Features

In January of 2015, D1Baseball.com relaunched as a fully functional college baseball website, after existing for the past decade as a high-traffic resource for scoreboards, schedules and standings. We assembled a dream team of the best college baseball writers in the country to cover the sport in print and podcasts, and a few of those writers are still churning out amazing content ten years later: Kendall Rogers, Aaron Fitt, Mark. Etheridge, Eric Sorenson and Shotgun Spratling. Other talented writers will join our team in the coming years, including Walter Villa, Mike Rooney, Joe Healy and Patrick Ebert, all of whom have joined our five anchors since the relaunch to share memories of the first decade of D1Baseball editorial content.

We asked our team to answer a few questions about the past decade, starting with their favorite moments, which we presented on Monday. On Tuesday, we unveiled our favorite teammates of the last 10 years. On Wednesday, our staff voted for the best team, player, pitcher, coach and program of the past decade.

Today we conclude with a good old fashioned link dump. We asked our staff to share their favorite pieces they’ve written over the past 10 years.

AARON FITT

The first story that comes to mind is my piece at the Coastal Carolina national championship in 2016. I felt like I was on that ride from the early days, visiting Conway last fall, and during opening weekend in the spring and midterms. during the season, then included a big Coastal regional win at LSU. That was a magnetic group of players, and they were a joy to put together. Not surprisingly, some of them have gone on to build great careers as young college coaches (Anthony Marks, Mike Morrison and Seth Lancaster).

UCLA’s David Berg was another all-time favorite player to cover, and I loved writing this in-depth feature on the full story of his journey to UCLA legend status:

Florida State’s Mike Martin was one of my favorites, and I wrote a few columns about him that I’m proud of — including this one after his career ended at the 2019 CWS. But I think my favorite is this one, which I wrote after watching Martin break Augie Garrido’s all-time hitting streak at Clemson in 2018. We republished it a year later when Martin became the first Division I coach to win 2,000 games:

One of my favorite roles in D1 Baseball is being able to tell unique, under-the-radar stories that feature Midwest and mid-major programs, in addition to my time spent covering summer team leagues. Here are three features that were among my favorites to follow for various reasons:

For me, it would be my Parker Byrd story and the follow up I wrote this past season. There are probably dozens of others, but that’s the one that always sticks in my head.
