A bright 2025 for Filipinos: SM Prime thrives on renewable energy

Imagine a world surrounded by the sun, which is the ultimate source of life. As climate change worsens due to fossil fuel consumption, sustainable energy alternatives are more important than ever. The Philippines, with abundant sunshine, is in a unique position to harness solar energy and help combat climate change. By 2024, Manila will see about 4,440 hours of daylight, which translates into significant solar energy generation potential.

SM Prime saw this ability early. In 2014, SM North EDSA became the first mall in the Philippines to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its roof, achieving the largest installation in Southeast Asia at the time. This move marked the beginning of SM Prime’s commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency.

SM Supermalls president Steven Tan explains, “SM’s environmental sustainability started with energy and water conservation. Transforming the energy in our supermarkets through renewable sources increases our responsibility to serve people and the planet. “

Today, SM Supermalls operates 44 malls with solar PV systems, generating a combined maximum power of 51.6 megawatts (MW). The largest installation is in SM City Santa Rosa. With 96,000 solar panels in all malls in Luzon and Visayas, SM Prime owns the largest solar energy portfolio in the Philippines, covering 33 hectares. These efforts are an important part of the company’s Net Zero by 2040 strategy, which aims to reduce its carbon footprint.

This 51.6-MW capacity significantly reduces carbon emissions, providing clean energy that powers thousands of homes or takes thousands of cars off the roads. It also reduces the need for coal, providing environmental benefits to both the planet and local communities.

Directly generated solar power fuels essential mall functions such as lighting and escalators, reducing SM Supermalls’ reliance on the national grid. This in turn helps to stabilize electricity supply, reduce the risk of blackouts and ease the burden on electricity suppliers. By tapping into clean, renewable energy, SM Prime is contributing to a sustainable future for the Philippines.

SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Square boasts a 2-MWp solar power system, reducing its environmental impact and contributing to a greener future.

SM Prime’s sustainability efforts go beyond solar energy. The company also focuses on waste management, water conservation, and air quality programs, all designed to reduce environmental impact. Through these broad initiatives, SM Prime strives to create positive change while ensuring responsible operations, and innovation.

Overall, SM Prime’s adoption of large-scale solar PV systems, combined with its extensive environmental initiatives, exemplifies its commitment to creating a sustainable future for the Philippines. By leading the way in renewable energy and sustainability, SM Prime is helping to pave the way for a clean, green, and prosperous future.
