Haney’s Footwork Drills: Ignoring the Real Threat

Devin Haney showed off his good foot on social media, preparing for his return on March 25 on BLK Prime. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) posted a video of himself working on a grass field, using ball-like movements with his feet.

The Left Hook Problem

How footwork will help Haney, 26, in the fight is the real question. His problem was taking headshots from Ryan Garcia, who doesn’t use agility drills on the ball. Devin needs to look at different training to block the left hook.

Former two-division world champion Haney’s rumored opponents for March 25 are these guys:

  • Adrien Broner
  • Tevin Farmer

Both are in their 30s and haven’t been hit by anyone of note in years. All of the footwork Haney showed in his video workout is a waste of time for him to fight Broner (35-5-1, 24 KOs) or Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs).

Young AB from 2010 to 2012 will be tormented by Devin, but he hasn’t looked the same since his 12-round decision loss to Marcos Maidana on December 14, 2013. That loss took something out of Broner.

Former four-division world champion Broner is coming off a 10-round decision loss to Blair Cobbs last year on June 7. He was knocked out by Cobbs in the second round and dominated the rest of the way.

Former IBF super featherweight champion Farmer lost his last two fights to William Zepeda and Raymond Muratalla. With Farmer undefeated by a world-class fighter since defeating Guillaume Frenois in 2019, it makes no sense for Haney to use him as his opponent.

What Haney needs is to learn how to block the left hook because that is the weapon that Ryan Garcia and Jorge Linares have both used to hurt him in fights. Fighting Farmer won’t help Haney, and neither will Broner. Those guys are too old and too old to be useful to Devin.
