You can now redeem American AAdvantage miles on all Hawaiian Airlines flights
There’s a new way to use your American Airlines AAdvantage miles for a flight to Hawaii.
Starting this week, AAdvantage members can redeem airline miles on Hawaiian Airlines flights between the US mainland and Hawaii.
Go to American booking channels and you will see changes immediately.
Improving to remove a bit? Airlines say many passengers pay for those first class seats
Consider, for example, the longest domestic flight in the US – Hawaiian Nonstop from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) with Hawaiian’s Airbus A330. In the case of this February trip, you’ll be traveling with 35,000 AAdvantage miles.
Or, here’s a round-trip flight to Honolulu from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Hawaiian for 22,500 AAdvantage miles.
It’s worth noting that in both of the above itineraries (and several others I’ve researched), only main cabin redemptions were available. So, you may have to be flexible if, say, you’re hoping to use your ADvantage miles to get a business-class seat on Hawaii’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Expanding American-Hawaiian ties
America’s cooperation with Hawaii is not entirely new. Both brands previously operated a limited loyalty program that allowed American loyalists to redeem ADvantage miles on short-haul, inter-island flights to Hawaii.
But now the relationship between the two airlines appears to be growing, with Hawaiian officially joining Alaska Airlines in the latest merger of the US airline industry. Alaska was already a perfect partner of American’s through the Oneworld alliance.

Starting Tuesday, AAdvantage members can use their miles on all flights operated by Hawaiian and booked through American’s website.
If you’re a frequent American flier looking to redeem miles for a flight between the US mainland and Hawaii, then you’ll have more flight options to choose from.
Also worth watching: how the relationship between America and Hawaii evolves in the coming months and years.
Salary is always limited
Despite the extensive ability to redeem AAdvantage miles on flights operated by Hawaii, significant revenue limitations remain on charter flights.
Advantage members can earn “bonus miles” on flights sold and operated by Hawaiian. Bonus AAdvantage miles don’t come with Loyalty Points, meaning those flights on Hawaiian still won’t help you work toward AAdvantage elite status.
However, with the Hawaiian brand set to join the Oneworld alliance as part of its merger with Alaska Air Group, it seems like a likely bet that its relationship with American could deepen in the future.
Even if you don’t have a large amount of AAdvantage miles in your account, there is another way to easily accumulate Hawaiian miles. American Express membership rewards transfer to Hawaiian at a 1:1 ratio.
