Quizon gets another P1 million for GM feat in Budapest Olympiad

FILIPINO chess star Daniel Quizon earned another P1 million by winning Grandmaster (GM) in last September’s Budapest Olympiad.

Mr. Quizon got it from David Almirol, the founder of the Kamatyas Chess Club and a generous chess sponsor, shortly after the tournament topped the tournament in what used to be a bank at SM Southmall.

“An early Christmas present for me, thank you Mr. David Almirol of sa Kamatyas Chess Club,” said Mr. 20-year-old Quizon, who now wants to reach the 2600 super-GM plateau.

The president of Kamatyas International Master Roderick Nava and the parents of Mr. Quizon Jovito and Analyn saw a simple ceremony.

Just last month, Mr. Quizon received P1 million from Dasmariñas City and P100,000 from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines Chief Butch Photosy.

Mr. Almirol has been planning to award Mr. Quizon for his work.

But it was only now that he made it happen.

It is interesting that Mr. Quizon came out on top of 14th Kamatyas fastest chess tournament program, seventh overall in the tournament.

It found Mr. Quizon P30,000.

It was another day in the office of Mr. Quizon. – Joey Villar
