The birthday boy, David Benavidez, pushed ‘ordinary’ WBA champion David Morrell during their fight today, leading to their press conference to promote their February 1 title.
The ‘Mexican Beast’ Benavidez was rampaging the fight and he was lucky that Morrell didn’t think of his belt when he threw it at him. Morrell threw it like a baseball player.
Benavidez Loses Control
When the two champions met, words were exchanged, and without warning, Benavidez shoved Cuban Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) into the room. Morrell responded by throwing his WBA belt at Benavidez, narrowly missing him with a shot. The two teams quickly came together to prevent punches from being thrown.
It looks like Benavidez is brazen about the fight, perhaps annoyed by Morrell’s trash talk, as he lets the Mexican Monster have it when they face each other. Morrell may have reminded Benavidez that he has been avoiding him for two years and wants no part in a fight with him.
Morrell is the biggest threat to Benavidez’s future dreams of fighting the winner of the Arur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 on February 22. There is a lot of money for Benavidez or Morrell to make the fight the winner of that contest.
So, it’s understandable why Benavidez is so tied up. He can’t really lose this fight against Cuban Morrell. If Benavidez, 28, is knocked out by KO artist Morrell, he will have a long way to go to get back to the top. It won’t be easy next time.
“I am very happy. It’s the biggest fight of my life, and I’m in the best shape of my life physically and emotionally,” said David Benavidez on Fight Hub TV, reacting to his spat with David Morrell during a press conference.
“Everything is 100%, and I’m going in there with a knockout victory. It was my birthday today, so I didn’t want to be too aggressive. I tried to shake my head, but he kept running his mouth. I will not allow anyone to disrespect me like that,” Benavidez continued about Morrell.
“I don’t know who this guy thinks he is. He thinks he is the toughest man in the world. I will f*** him. There is nothing more to say. He’s a martial artist, yes, but I’m going to make all these fighters look average.”
