Bumrah, India avoid being followed as Australia heads into the third Test by drawing | Sports News
A strong final wicket set by India in Brisbane all but confirmed the result they got in the third Test at the Gabba.
Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep shared a 10-wicket stand to help India avoid the follow-on on the fourth day of the third Test in Brisbane as Australia’s slim hopes of victory were further dented by an injury to Josh Hazlewood.
Deep sent Pat Cummins flying over the bouncer at gully for four runs to push India to safety, sparking celebrations among the visitors at the Gabba on Tuesday.
Number 11 Deep hit the Australian captain two sixes later, then blocked another ball before the stumps were called for a light failure.
With Deep unbeaten on 27, Bumrah on 10, the cutters pushed India to 252 for nine, 193 runs behind Australia’s first innings total of 445.
An unbroken partnership of 39 runs saved India from defeat, Australia were forced to bat again and there was little time left to take another 10 wickets.
The hosts’ task was made more difficult by the injury to fast bowler Hazlewood, who has been ruled out of the remaining Test and is expected to miss the five-match series, which was tied 1-1.
The fourth Test begins in Melbourne on December 26 with the fifth and final Test in Sydney from January 3.
