Do You Have Your Real ID? You’ll Need It to Fly in 2025
It’s legal: If you’re flying within the US, you’ll need Real ID from the start May 7, 2025. Your old driver’s license will no longer be valid on or after that date. Only a Real ID or other acceptable form of identification will get you through a Transportation Security Authority security check.
The Real Identity Act, which enforces consistent and secure identification standards used for air travel and entry into government facilities, was passed in 2007. After many delays, it is scheduled to begin operations next May. US citizens over the age of 18 will need to present an enhanced driver’s license with real ID or other government-approved identification — such as a passport — to fly home.
Here’s everything you need to know about Real ID, including where to apply, what you’ll need to bring and what happens if you don’t have one after the 2025 deadline. To find out more about the travel rules, find out how renew your passport online and what steps to take if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
What is a Real ID and how do I know I have one?
Essentially, Real ID is an enhanced version of your regular state driver’s license or identification card, intended to help authorities fight terrorism and identity fraud.
Today, all 50 states and the District of Columbia comply with real ID standards, the Department of Homeland Security said. If you recently renewed your driver’s license, it is probably already compatible. If it’s been a few years, you’ll need to update it.
You can tell by looking at your license: If there is a gold, black or white star in the upper right corner, you have a Real ID. (There are slight differences — California puts a white star over the state bear symbol, while Maine puts it in the state’s outline.)
How do I apply for a Real ID card in my state?
Whatever state agency issued your driver’s license is responsible for distributing Real IDs. Required documents will vary but usually include proof of identity and status as a US citizen or resident, proof of your Social Security number and substantial proof of your current address.
Originals or hard copies of documents — birth certificate, Social Security card, US passport — are required, with photocopies and screenshots not accepted. Check your state’s driver’s license agency website for more information.
After you apply, you should get a temporary paper ID until your Real ID compliant license arrives in the mail about three or four weeks later.
With a few exceptions, the cost of obtaining a Real ID compliant license is the same as renewing your license or non-driver’s ID.
What happens if I do not receive a Real ID before the deadline?
Starting in May 2025 — unless the deadline is extended again — federal agencies such as the Transportation Security Administration will accept Real ID-approved licenses and identification cards “for purposes of accessing government facilities,” according to DHS.
That includes airport security checkpoints.
With one exception, US adults will need to show a valid passport, even to fly home, or one of these other forms of ID:
Not having a Real ID compliant license will not affect other uses of a driver’s license, including validating a person’s ability to operate a vehicle or purchase alcohol, firearms or tobacco.
