This mod turns the PSP into a mini PS2 with Bluetooth controller support
What if you could turn a PSP with a broken screen into a mini PS2, connect a Bluetooth controller to it, and play PSP games on your TV? That’s the idea of Retro Mod Works’ PS Placeable, a mod that “includes” the PSP and was featured yesterday in a video from YouTube channel Macho Nacho Productions.
Retro Mod Works costs $274.99 for a pre-built PS. Those are on a waiting list for now, though — a message on the site says the project is a “one-man show” and that demand for Placeable was higher than expected.
Retro also offers to mod customer-supplied PSPs for $100 less, and there’s an option to pre-order DIY parts and do the conversion work yourself. The mod requires an updated PSP-2000 or PSP-3000, as the original PSP did not have video output. It’s unclear when the DIY parts will ship – we’ve asked Retro Mod Works and will update when we hear back.
The main person behind the project, named Dan, told Macho Nacho boss Tito Perez that he “hated the idea of buying digital games” with physical copies, and wanted a way to add Bluetooth controller support while saving the UMD drive. He also mentioned in the Reddit answers that his goal is to help people restore broken PSPs with a mod, which does not require a console screen.
But buying one of these mod kits can be expensive or require skills that most people don’t have. If you want to play PSP games on your TV and don’t mind having a UMD drive, the PSP Go – which didn’t have Sony’s oddball optical drive but supported Bluetooth controllers and had a video output option – is a great phone to come by.
