OpenAI’s official account on X was taken down for selling a cryptocurrency scam on Monday evening.
On Monday at 6:24PM ET, the @OpenAINewsroom account, which shares news from OpenAI and has nearly 54,000 followers, made a now-deleted post promoting the “$OPENAI” token.
“We are very excited to announce $OPEANAI: a token that bridges the gap between Al and blockchain technology,” the post said. “All OpenAI users are eligible to claim a share of the first $OPENAI. Holding $OPENAI will provide access to all our future beta programs.” The post also included a link to a spoofed version of the OpenAI website at a URL that was not openai.com.
When I visited the site, there was a section asking for the $OPENAI cryptocurrency. When I clicked the button, it asked me to connect the wallet, which I didn’t.
OpenAI and X did not immediately respond to a request for comment. As of this writing, the OpenAI Newsroom account has not posted anything to explain what may have happened. The account was launched earlier this month.
