Fans and promoters say Devin Haney needs to get busy with his career and stop sitting on the sidelines regrouping after his loss last April. He lost a 12-round majority decision to upset Ryan Garcia on April 20 in Brooklyn. That loss seems to have taken something away from the former two-division world champion.
A year on the sidelines
Bill Haney said this week that he has “big news” coming soon about Devin’s next fight, but he didn’t give a damn about who it would be or what weight class it would be. If Devin moves up to 147, he could fight for a world title against WBC champion Mario Barrios or WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis.
The IBF champion, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, is interested in fighting these guys, but he is too late to make fights. Bill will move quickly to make it happen if that’s where Devin wants to go.
Promoter Eddie Hearn believes it is important for Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) to return to action, noting that he will be out of the ring for almost a year when he returns.
That’s not a good thing for 26-year-old Haney, a two-time world champion, if he wants to stay sharp. Haney is losing a lot of money by staying out of the ring, and he could defend against Sandor Martin and fight IBF champion Liam Paro by unification.
“He Must Go”
“Let’s see what Devin does next. For me, I think you need to go. He fought in April. Now it’s December. He will not fight in January. He’ll be out for about a year when it’s all said and done,” said Eddie Hearn on iFL TV about Devin Haney, who has been out of action since losing to Ryan Garcia on April 20. “I’d like to see Devin get back in the ring. I think he is an amazing talent.”
