Automattic acquires WPAI, a startup that makes AI products for WordPress
WordPress hosting company Automattic said Monday it is acquiring WPAI, a startup that builds AI solutions for WordPress.
WPAI products include CodeWP, which lets you use AI to create WP Plugins; AgentWP, an AI assistant for WordPress site builders; and WP Chat, a chatbot for WordPress-related questions. WPAI noted on its blog that CodeWP and AgentWP will be discontinued in their respective regions and integrated within the Automattic offering.
WPAI’s founding team will join Automattic to lead WordPress’ AI efforts. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“They will be working to test, build, and integrate new AI solutions into the ecosystem to redefine how users and developers work with WordPress,” Automattic said.
Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg also announced the acquisition separately on his blog.
In its blog, WPAI said the company will focus on creating AI solutions for the WordPress ecosystem.
“This includes improving WordPress’s AI standards, improving the platform’s performance, and creating tools that help users build and manage better websites. We will work closely with the WordPress community to implement these developments thoughtfully while maintaining open source values,” WPAI said.
Automattic already offers you an AI writing assistant and a tool to help you write short posts.
The WPAI deal is Automattic’s second in two months. Last month, the company snapped up a competitor to Grammarly for developers, called Harper, which checks grammar locally on devices.
