Police Arrest Suspect in UnitedHealthcare Executive Shooting, App Developer Luigi Mangione

UnitedHealthcare did not immediately respond to a request for comment from WIRED. In a statement sent to other media sources, a company spokesperson said: “We hope that today’s horror brings some relief to Brian’s family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy. We thank law enforcement and will continue to cooperate with them in this investigation. We ask everyone to respect the privacy of the family as they mourn.”

A search of Mangione’s footsteps online paints a picture of one thing in common, including accounts on Pinterest, Skype, Instagram, and Facebook. For X, what appears to be his account featured a photo of what appears to be an X-ray following major spinal surgery, one of the few clear references to health care in his online account history.

A GoodReads account with the suspect’s photo and username and email address and a GitHub account linked to Mangione include several books related to back pain, including Crooked: Tricking the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery. Other topics include Hillbilly Elegyby US vice president-elect JD Vance, and “The Industrial Society and Its Future,” an anti-technology diatribe better known as the Unabomber Manifesto. The GoodReads account has since been set to private.

Mangione, who was valedictorian of his private high school in the Baltimore area, appears to be an avid gamer, with dozens of game titles listed on an Xbox Live account bearing his name. In 2018, Mangione described himself as interested in making video games, and helped found a game development club at Penn that was quickly joined by nearly 60 students, according to a redacted article by the university’s news agency.

On a GitHub page believed to be Mangione’s, he shared code collections that focused on machine learning and human-computer interaction. Among these is a project titled “Meccanoid-Imitate,” apparently using Arduino—an open source and user-friendly electronics platform—and the programmable Meccanoid robot. The archive, last updated four years ago, includes animated GIFs showing a seemingly classy Mangione, waving his arms while the Meccanoid robot behind him mimics his gestures.
