Trailers of the week: Star Trek, Severance, and Gundam

It’s the first week of December, and the end of the year is fast approaching and we have a lot to look forward to in theaters this month. That looks cool The Lord of the Rings anime hits US theaters on the 13th; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 follows on the 20th; and I am very happy to see Nosferatu December 25. (If you’re not with me on that last one, give Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com his review to read and get back to me.)

While I’m waiting to be spooked by Robert Eggers’ new vampire movie, let’s take a look at some great trailers from the past week.

I’ll admit that what appeals most to me about this straight-to-the-air spy movie ending Star Trek: Discovery by Michelle Yeoh as Governor Philippa Georgiou. You still have a lot of things pleasure in this trailer. The trailers don’t yet reveal what threat they’ll be facing, other than being forced to work together, but it looks like it’s going to be pretty tough on the rag-tag group of action antiheroes.

The Olatunde Osunsanmi-directed film also stars Omari Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, Sven Ruygrok, Humberly Gonzalez, Rob Kazinsky, and Sam Richardson. It premieres on Paramount Plus from January 24.

I arrived late Separation party, as I finally finished it a few months ago, so I can only imagine how eager the people who saw its finale were to see this story continue. Well, the second season of creator Dan Erickson’s biarro sci-fi drama is about to arrive, and it looks like it’s going to bring answers, and mystery piled on top of it.

All of the main characters from the first season, including Mark (Adam Scott), Dylan (Zach Cherry), Helly (Britt Lower), and Irving (John Turturro) are returning, and will be joined by cast members like Alia. Shawkat, Gwendoline Christie, and Bob Balaban. The second season Separation It premieres January 17 on Apple TV Plus.

The third season of Invincible we will see an elderly Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), telling GDA director Cecil Stedman (Walton Goggins) and episodes showing creator Robert Kirkman hopes that each one will feel like an ending. And there is no season break this time.

The show premieres in three episodes on February 6 on Amazon Prime, with new episodes airing every Thursday after that until March 13.

The Wheel of Time continues its run of the Robert Jordan fantasy epic on March 13 next year. In its third season, the show follows Joshua Stradowski’s Rand al’Thor – “Dragon Reborn” – and Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike) as they enter the Aiel Waste. It’s been over twenty years since I read the book series, so I couldn’t spoil what happened there for you if I wanted to, but I seem to remember this being a dark time in the series.

Who knows evil A ravine‘s, uh, gorge, but it’s apparently contained well enough that humanity only needs two snipers – who aren’t allowed to interact – stationed on either side to make sure it stays there. Hackers, Levi (Miles Teller) and Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy), do they join forces and fight each other, and end up in a ravine. Oops!

Scott Derrickson directs the film, which also stars Sigourney Weaver, Sope Dirisu, and William Houston. It premieres February 14 on Apple TV Plus.

Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuuX

Big robot anime fans rejoice: there’s something new Mobile Suit Gundam coming next year. It is called Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuuX, and produced by Khara, the studio behind the Reconstruction of Evangelion films.

The strange name refers to a Gundam called gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuuX. The show will follow a high school student – named Yuzuriha “Machu” Amate (Tomoyo Kurosawa) – who learns to co-pilot a building-sized, sword-wielding robot with pilot Shuji Ito (Shimba Tsuchiya). Some of its episodes will head to Japanese theaters on January 17.
