There are only a few events that happen in your life that feel truly special. As if someone finally got around to a big idea you’ve been wanting to see executed for a long time. The Carnivàle that was a show for me. Airing for only two seasons on HBO back in 2003, this historical horror has managed to bring something to television that has never been replicated.
Every Prophet in His House
Explaining the theme of the story The Carnivàle It wouldn’t do justice to its large cast, but the basic premise follows two men, Ben Hawkins (Nick Stahl) and Justin Crowe (Clancy Brown) and their rise to many supernatural abilities and events. Set during the Great Depression in the midst of the Dust Bowl, the series uses these two characters to explore an ancient battle between two magical powers and the feelings of an impending apocalypse that color this crumbling America.
Ben becomes part of a traveling carnival and this is where the collective nature of the show often comes into play. The Carnivàle it allows for a rich and varied tapestry of characters and stories that often don’t fit directly into the larger supernatural story at play. This is often seen as one of the main criticisms of the show’s viewers, but it is the personality and heart of the opposition that gives it its greatest strength.
However, I would be remiss if I didn’t say that Brother Justin is one of the best roles Clancy Brown has played in her entire career. His story delves into the depths of depravity, sin, and evil as he achieves his purpose with the power he wields. An amazing character who should be considered one of the unsung true villains of TV. Brother Justin is worth the price of admission The Carnivàle alone.
The Continuing Horror of Carnivàle
But, I called The Carnivàle it’s a horror series and that’s where I want to focus. There are a number of dreams/visions in the series as well as some strange supernatural moments. I don’t want to spoil everyone who may be discovering this show for the first time, but I will say that the picture above is the moment that has stuck with me since I started watching this series. It’s one of the most shocking endings to a story I’ve seen played out in a regular television series and it still chills me to this day.
What’s more impressive is that the series was canceled after its second season ended on a huge and game-changing cliffhanger that will never be resolved. Unfortunately, it sounds It is lost he removed a lot of steam The Carnivàle since that series started in 2004 and is doing a better job of capturing a large audience with a magical and seemingly magical television show.
At this point, there will never be a true ending to it The Carnivàle. Too much time has passed to film anything that would involve a lot of real actors. There’s always the possibility of a series reboot or something, but it’s very unlikely that it will capture some of the power that the original series still holds.
