Adrian Wojnarowski, aka Woj, revealed the real reason for his shock exit to ESPN, after being on the shelf since 2017.
The former NBA star was diagnosed with prostate cancer six months before he decided to retire, Sports Illustrated reported Thursday.
Woj left ESPN to become the general manager of the men’s basketball program at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure also revealed what he was suffering at the time, he says.
“Time is endless and I want to use mine in ways that are personally meaningful,” he wrote.
And he told SI this week, “That was about cancer.”
He underwent a biopsy after two blood tests revealed an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and received the news of his diagnosis minutes before he appeared on the video call. NBA Countdown.
“When you feel cancer, you think it’s going through your body like Pac-Man,” Woj explained “Prostate cancer, it usually stays confined to your prostate and grows slowly.”
The cancer is “very limited,” and Wojnarowski says he is asymptomatic, does not currently need surgery and will continue to monitor the cancer for any changes.
He also made it clear that cancer is not the only reason he is leaving ESPN.
“I didn’t want to spend one day of my life waiting for someone’s MRI or calling an agent at 1 a.m. about an ankle sprain,” Wojnarowski told Sports Illustrated.
The 55-year-old told SI that the death of longtime NFL player Chris Mortensen from throat cancer made him rethink what was important to him.
“It made me remember that work is not everything,” said Woj. “In the end it will be your family and your closest friends. And again, like, no one gives like. No one remembers [breaking stories] at the end. It’s just a vapor.”
