Ubisoft’s XDefiant shooter is shutting down and sending refunds to players

Despite officially launching the game in the spring of this year, Ubisoft has already announced that it is ending development and sunsetting its free-to-play team-based shooter. The XDefiant. Love Hyper Scape before you, The XDefiant had high expectations, when Ubisoft revealed more than 1 million players in its closed beta last year. Now, it will disappear quickly, as it is not accepting new players from today and is scheduled to shut down the servers completely next June.

Although the launch is delayed, Ubisoft has said that The XDefiant reached more than 10 million players in its first two weeks and “exceeded expectations due to adoption and strong average revenue per session day.” However, it could not maintain that momentum, and this fall, there were rumors of trouble, with Playing Inside reported that concurrent player numbers across all platforms fell below 20,000.

Ubisoft says, “The game will always be available to all players who have joined The XDefiant before December 3, 2024. All functionality, including progress, events, rewards, and achievements, will continue to be available until June 3, 2025.” The planned Season 3 content is yet to be launched, and the company is refunding anyone who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack, as well as players who purchased VC and DLC in the past month.

Like Concord developer Firewalk Studios, the closure comes with job losses. According to Ubisoft, the “severe consequences” lead to “the closure of our San Francisco and Osaka production studios and the downsizing of our Sydney production site, with 143 layoffs in San Francisco and a possible 134 layoffs in Osaka and Sydney.” .”
