Journalist Thomas Hauser is worried about Anthony Joshua’s brain health after seeing him destroyed by IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois with a knockout in the fifth round last Saturday night in London.
Thomas notes that Joshua can no longer “walk through fire” at this point in his career, and feels that continuing to fight puts his life at risk. Joshua, 34, has created a fortune for his family.
Hauser feels that former two-time heavyweight champion Joshua no longer has the same power that he had when he got up to defeat Wladimir Klitschko. He says he would like to see Joshua get a full neurological exam by Dr. Margaret Goodman to examine her brain health.
Joshua probably wouldn’t retire even if his brain wasn’t given a good health report from an MRI because he thinks he can still compete with the best, which he obviously can’t. He’s starting to get suspicious though.
If Joshua loses the rematch with Dubois, he may retire after that loss unless the Honorable Turki Alalshikh offers him a large sum of money to fight Tyson Fury. Joshua won’t turn down a $100 million+ payday to fight Fury’s remainder after a second knockout by Oleksandr Usyk on December 21st.
Did the referee help Joshua?
“I felt that the referee, Marcus McDonnell, did not do a good job as a referee in that fight. Unintentionally or not, I felt like he was putting aside his decisions in favor of me [Joshua],” said Thomas Houser on Secondsout, talking about the referee who officiated the fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois last Saturday.
Hauser is not the only one who felt that the referee helped Joshua survive Dubois. Some fans on social media felt that way and believed that Joshua would have been sent off sooner without the referee.
“He never once warned him about holding, which AJ did when he was beaten in the first round. “He was wrestling,” Hauser said of the referee.
“You could say he had to restrain himself to survive, which I understand, but it’s still against the rules. But the referee never warned him about that, and without any previous warning, he took away a point from Dubois with a low blow. Even if the referee tipped things in his favor, it was clearly not a good night [Joshua].”
It’s possible that AJ would have been knocked out by Dubois in the second round if the referee had talked to his team because, otherwise, he would have been shot out of existence. The end was coming quickly for Joshua, which probably helped him. He wouldn’t have to take all the punishment he got in the third, fourth and fifth rounds.
Joshua Is Not The Same Fighter
“Joshua has reached the peak of his career, and he’s been there for a while; he doesn’t have the ability to walk through the fire and win,” said Hauser.” He did that against Wladimir Klitschko. He got hurt, came back, and won, but he was a very small man physically[2017] and mentally young at that.”
It is clear that Joshua will no longer be able to withstand the battle and difficulties he has to face. AJ’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has been defending him fairly well since his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk, but he couldn’t do that anymore last night when he was thrown against the dangerous striker Dubois, and we saw the result.
Hearn created Joshua with his ability to make a match, choosing many fights such as Wladimir Klitschko, Alexander Povetkin, and Kubrat Pulev in their prime. Joshua probably would have lost all those fighters and more if Hearn had matched him when they were still strong and active,
“I just don’t like that AJ got hit in the head last night. It was shocking. It reminded me of Andy Ruiz’s first fight,” said Hauser.

“Every time AJ fights, Eddie Hearn makes a lot of money,” Hauser said. “There are people in AJ’s team who make huge amounts of money every time he fights. I don’t know what his physical condition is. I have never seen the MRI from AJ. I’m sure there will be people who will say he had a great MRI. I would love it if she did full sensory makeup with someone like Margaret Goodman.
“I was saddened to see the way he responded after being hit hard by Dubois for the first time. I just look down every time I see Anthony Joshua get hit in the head. Joshua who came off the canvas defeating Wladimir Klitschko is no more. He no longer has the same equipment.
“I overestimated AJ, and I underestimated Dubois. I hope AJ will keep his eye focused, and I’m not talking about finances because I think he has a lot of money now, wealth for his production, his children, and his grandchildren one day. He has all that, and what matters is his health. Fighters don’t think the worst can happen to them, but sometimes it does,” said Hauser.
For anyone who thought Joshua would beat Dubois, he didn’t look closely at the opponents he had fought in his previous four fights after suffering a mental breakdown following his second loss against Usyk in 2022.
All you have to do is look at who Hearn compared to Joshua two years ago and look at how AJ played against Usyk to know what will happen if he goes in there with Dubois.
It was all smoke and mirrors for Joshua and the ignorant public, who were too lazy to check who was fighting nearby. Hearn pulled the wool over the sheep’s eyes by causing a commotion, making them think Joshua was fully revived after hitting four tomato cans. It was all a trick with the manager.
